Kumbharwada, as its name suggests, translates to ‘the potter’s colony.’ This 12-acre area is located within Dharavi, the largest slum in the world. Families have lived in Kumbharwada for over a hundred years, spanning six to seven generations, while practising their ancestral art of pottery. Approximately 500 families from Kutch and Gujarat settled here in the early 20th century to continue their traditional pottery skills. The roots of pottery in India can be traced back to the Indus Valley civilisation, but in Mumbai, it specifically connects to Kumbharwada in Dharavi.
